Mentor Spotlight of the Week!

Mentor of the Week: Jenna Lesondak!

What is your year and your (intended) major?

Sophomore, Psychology and Political Science

What days do you mentor?

Wednesdays and Fridays

What is your favorite thing about SMILE?

My favorite thing about Smile is hanging out with my mentee Makeda. She makes me laugh so much with her sass and independent nature. I am never bored when I am with her.

What is your favorite SMILE moment?

My favorite Smile moment was probably on the camping trip when we played Tug of War with our mentees. Our team was beast and proceeded to own all the other teams, but what I really loved was seeing how into it my mentee got and how much fun she had!

Congrats!

Mentor Spotlight of the Week!

Congratulations Loc Hoang!

What is your major?

Linguistics

What days do you mentor?

Mondays and Wednesdays

What is your favorite thing about SMILE?

Getting that lightbulb to turn on in Albert's head after I finish explaining some concept that confused him in class, using poorly constructed metaphors. He always tries to relate it back to me using even worse metaphors.

What is your favorite SMILE moment?

We made and flew paper airplanes in Ms. Nashelsky's room after she'd left once. I tried my best to explain aerodynamics to Albert, but my knowledge really doesn't extend beyond the vocal tract, so I encouraged him to look it up online. Never seen a kid so excited about aerodynamics.

Yay Loc! :)

Mentor Spotlight of the Week!

Say hi to Valerie Kong!!

What is your (intended) major?

My intended major is Social Welfare with a minor in Education.

What days do you mentor?

I mentor Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

What is your favorite thing about SMILE?

My favorite thing about Project SMILE is that everyone is so kind and welcoming. At the general meeting I felt like this was the organization I belong to on campus. I love my mentee because we have the same sass and get along very well. We're kind of like siblings to one another.

What has been your favorite SMILE moment?

My favorite SMILE moment has probably been the St. Patrick's Day Scavenger Hunt. It was hilarious because my mentee didn't want to do it until I gave her the paper with the cut out pouch to decorate. Then we both started complaining about having to go up and down so many flights of stairs. Definitely bonded with other mentors and mentees that day.

Congratulations Valerie! :)

Congrats Karl Ravancho!! :)

What is your year and your (intended) major?

I am a first year and I am pre-business/Economics major.

What days do you mentor?

Mondays and Wednesdays

What is your favorite thing about SMILE?

l love spending time with amazing people in Project SMILE. My fellow mentors are always energetic and fun to be around. Also, my mentee Oscar is welcoming and so hilarious. He's taught me how to play and laugh like a kid again.

What has been your favorite SMILE moment?

Oscar and I have our best moments in the game room. We always play foosball, and my mentee is a pro to be honest so watch out. Even though he beats me (every single time), I always end up laughing. Don't worry. Oscar is mentoring me in foosball.

Mentor Spotlight of the Week!

Say hello to Annie Li! :)

What is your year and your (intended) major?

I'm a junior and majoring in MCB with an emphasis in Biochemistry.

What days do you mentor?

I mentor Wednesdays and Fridays.

What is your favorite thing about SMILE?

My favorite thing about SMILE is my mentee. She's such a good student and polite kid. She keeps me from doing crazy things like drowning my hands in glitter.

What has been your favorite SMILE moment?

My favorite moment was when we were writing letters to our penpals in Spain. My mentee was spending a long time writing her letter in glitter glue. When she finally finished, she threw her hands up, and was like "YES!" Then the glitter tube slipped out of her hands and went splat on the letter she had just finished. For some reason, that was really funny to us. We managed to salvage the letter, which was good.

Congratulations Annie! :D

Mentor Spotlight of the Week!

Say hello to Megan Wang!!

What is your year and your major?

2nd year, United States History major

What days do you mentor?

Wednesday and Friday

What is your favorite thing about P. SMILE?

It's still very early on in the year, but I would probably have to say that my favorite thing about Smile are the mentors and mentees because both groups try to engage you in conversations and activities to make you feel welcome.

What has been your favorite SMILE moment?

I've only seen my mentee a couple times, but my favorite moment is when we were talking about different horror movies and just figured out our fear factor.

If you are a mentor or mentee who don't usually come on Fridays, then be sure to come. Mentors please catch the 4:30pm 49B bus @Bancroft/Telegraph to come to Longfellow. Mentors please RSVP via email if you plan on going.

Smile Room

Our official SMILE designated room for academic hour will be in room 215 (Ms. Nashelsky's room) every day from 3:00-4:15pm EXCEPT Wednesdays, where we will either be in the cafeteria or another classroom. Please make sure to go up to room 215 after announcements. In addition, round robin tutoring will be held in here every afternoon!

Fingerprinting

Where: 2020 Bonar St. Rm 126, Berkeley, CA (Berkeley School Volunteers office)

When: ASAP, call 510-644-6244 or email bsv@berkeley.net to make an appointment!

As some of you already know, Berkeley School Volunteers has implemented a fingerprinting system for this year. All volunteers, new and returning, are required to make an appointment for fingerprinting. Unfortunately, we cannot make group appointments, so mentors you will have to make your own by calling or email the contact info listed above. Please remember that this is REQUIRED FOR ALL MENTORS. After a couple of weeks, you will not be allowed into the school unless you have been fingerprinted or have made an appointment to be fingerprinted.

If you have already been fingerprinting, please let us know ASAP so we can mark that in our roster. Thank you!!

Round Robin Tutoring

To our returning mentors: we're implementing a new system this year in which we ask a couple of mentors to be on-call tutors for one of their mentoring days. This should hopefully provide a more stable framework in which you can support each other. You will be posted in Ms. Nashelsky's room for the duration of homework hour; you'll be working with your own mentee during that time, but if another pair is having trouble they'll come to you for help. If you are interested in signing up for any subject(s), please let me know or email sana@calprojectsmile.org for details.

Some Quick Reminders!

Hey all mentors, mentees, and parents. Although this is only the first week of mentoring, we have some important events coming up already! Please keep a note of these dates.

Parents Night

Friday, October 4th, Project Smile will be hosting Parents Night. The event will take place at Longfellow Cafeteria at 5 pm, following EDP that day. It would be great if we mentors could meet the parents and/or families of our mentees!

Mentor Mentee #1

Sunday, October 6th, will be our first Mentor Mentee event! Please stay tuned for additional information.

Mentor Reminders

Many of you have heard this before, but we want to emphasize fingerprinting once again. BSV now requires all Berkeley volunteers, new or returning, to get fingerprinted with their system. Please make an appointment with BSV either by phone or email as soon as possible. Additional information can be found along with the application here.

For those of you who are enrolled in seminar, we will be meeting this week! Please don't forget (:

First Week of Mentoring

is quickly approching! We hope everyone is as excited as we are about it! Just a few quick reminders for both the return and new mentors.

Returning Mentors

  • Mentoring will start on September 23rd. We will be sending out contact group information soon. Be on the lookout for that!!!
  • Finger printing. Starting this semester, BSV will be requiring all mentors, including returning mentors, to get finger printed. Unfortunately even if you have gotten finger printed for a different organization, you will still have to get tested through BSV. However, you will only need to do this once.

New Mentors

  • Mentor Training. It will be held this weekend, September 21st, in 109 Dwinelle at 10am. Be prepared to have an amazing time with great company! We look forward to seeing you there.
  • Finger Printing. BSV will be requiring all mentors, but we will talk about this in greater detail at mentor training.
